Encinitas City Councilwoman Maggie Houlihan Passes Away

Encinitas City Councilwoman Maggie Houlihan died Friday evening after a long battle with endometrial cancer, her husband said Saturday morning. She was 63.

Well known for her compassion for any living creature and for her long-standing involvement in civic issues, Houlihan served on the council for 11 years and was mayor twice ---- once in 2004 and once in 2009 ---- under the city's rotating mayoral system.

"This community has changed because of her and will continue to be changed because of her legacy," her husband, Ian Thompson, said Saturday, adding that he believes most people in town knew only part of what his wife did.
