A federal jury in Salt Lake City convicted Brian Mitchell on kidnapping and other charges on Friday. Smart spent some time in San Diego during her kidnapping.

The street preacher could face life in prison when he is sentenced in May for the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart in 2002 when she was 14.

When the verdict was read, Smart turned to her mother and they both smiled. She later hugged the federal prosecutors.  Her father gave a thumbs-up and said, "It's real." Those were the same words he used when his daughter was found in 2003.

Smart, who's now 23, testified that she was forced into a polygamous marriage and was raped almost daily during the nine months she was held captive.

Mitchell's former stepdaughter says she doesn't know why jurors didn't find him mentally ill. She says "he honestly believes God tells him to do these things."
