Woman Jumped, Shot in Face With BB Gun in El Cajon: SDSO

A woman shot in the face with a BB gun during a robbery attempt in El Cajon Wednesday said she was jumped and shot over a misunderstanding.

Victim Ashley Mickens told NBC 7 that a friend of hers named Denise gave her $90 as payback for giving her rides to and from work over the summer. Both Mickens and Denise are in-home healthcare workers for the elderly, according to Mickens.

“I was taking her back and forth to her jobs because she was walking and it was really hot this summer," Mickens said.

Then on Wednesday Denise, described by Mickens as in her 50s, came knocking on Mickens' door demanding she pay her back. She said Denise jumped on her and a physical altercation ensued.

As Denise and Mickens grappled, Denise's boyfriend, described by Mickens as a man in his 50s, jumped on her also.

“Once he jumped on me and I hit him to get him off, his nephew or whoever they brought with them started shooting me.

Mickens said the nephew, a man in his 30s, fired about six shots from the BB gun and hit her three or four times. Once in the cheek, and two or three times in the upper body.

Two of the BB's, including the one that penetrated her face, will be in her skin for the rest of her life.

"One of them is pretty close to one of my arteries. It was safer for them to leave them there rather than to remove them," she said.

Mickens said that when she tried to explain that the $90 was a payment from Denise and not a loan, she was accused of lying. Mickens alleges that Denise has alcohol abuse problems and was drunk during the confrontation.

“I’m angry but I would rather just see them go to jail for it and be done with it," Mickens said.

Mickens called her mother after the incident and her mother called San Diego County Sheriff's deputies immediately.

Deputies responded to East Bradley Street near Graves Ct. at around 1:20 p.m. but all three suspects had fled with Mickens' purse which had her rent money inside. The three suspects remain on the loose.

Mickens said that she'll be dealing with some soreness and swelling for the next couple of weeks.
