Caught on Camera: Flames Rip Through Palm Trees in East Village

The fire sparked in palm trees at 17th Street and Broadway Monday night

Ash filled the air in downtown San Diego’s East Village community Monday night when several palm trees went up in flames.

The blaze sparked just before 10 p.m. at palm trees at 17th Street and Broadway. The fire was caught on video by Tracy Thalo in the clip seen above and here (warning: graphic language in the longer clip on YouTube).

Southbound Interstate 5 to eastbound State Route 94 was temporarily shut down to traffic as crews worked to put out the blaze. Firefighters with the San Diego Fire Department (SDFD) were able to knock out the flames before they could spread to nearby buildings.

Investigators with SDFD’s Metro Arson Strike Team (MAST) were called out to investigate the cause of the fire. No further details were released, and no injuries were reported.
