North County has higher rates of public drunkenness arrests than the rest of San Diego, reports our media partner North County Times.
Nearly 70 percent of arrests in Del Mar are charged as drunk in public and an analysis of this year’s booking records show public intoxication as more than 1 out of every 5 arrests made by North County police agencies.
Oceanside had 744 public drunken arrests this year. Escondido came at second with 595. Carlsbad, Encinitas and Vista round out North County's top five most publicly drunk cities.
While drunk driving arrests are more common in the rest of San Diego, North County alone accounts for nearly 30 percent of public drunkenness bookings.
North County law enforcement is confused by the statistics and Escondido police officers said they abandoned efforts to study it after a data-collection effort led them nowhere.
