A North County man lay pinned for hours inside his truck after crashing near Valley Center Road before he was spotted and pulled to safety.
During the rescue, California Highway Patrol officers discovered two open containers of vodka in the truck. You’d think that’s an open and shut case but wait. By the time the driver was discovered, it had been too long to determine if he was drunk at the time of the crash.
Denis Gerdes, 49, of Vista crashed his Toyota Tundra Saturday evening and spent the night pinned inside. A driver spotted the wreck Sunday afternoon.
Verdes was disoriented but largely uninjured when firefighters pulled him from the truck at about 12:40 p.m. Sunday below Valley Center Road, Sgt. Lewis Hall of the CHP told the North County Times.
Just how Gerdes ended up off the road isn't completely clear. There may have been a 911 call tied to the accident placed Saturday night, the paper reported.
Gerdes, from inside the truck, called 911 himself but reportedly gave the wrong location.
