A Caltrans employee and county probationary worker on roadside cleanup detail were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after they were hit by an out-of-control driver on Interstate 15.

The accident happened just after 10:30 a.m. Thursday on I-15 north between state Route 94 and the Interstate 805 interchange. According to investigators with the California Highway Patrol, a woman driving a white Infiniti was in the slow lane "fishing for change in her car" when she lost control and veered toward the Caltrans crew.

The car clipped a Caltrans van and then hit the two people. The impact was severe enough that the front windshield of the Infiniti was knocked out. The car's left wheel came off and a portion of the axle snapped off. There was also significant damage to the car's hood and roof.

The driver of the vehicle was also transported to a hospital. Her condition is not known.

Five people were in the roadside crew, including three probationary workers.
