If you think there's been a lot of bank robberies this year, then you'd be right. At least when you compare the numbers so far this year to the numbers last year.
According to the San Diego F.B.I. office, there were 102 bank robberies in 2009. With two months left in 2010, the number is at 142 and climbing.
But agents say don't be alarmed in what appears to be a big increase in bank robberies.
"This same time in 2008, we had 151 bank robberies in San Diego and Imperial Counties,"said F.B.I. spokesman Darrell Foxworth. "We ended that year with 167 bank robberies."
Foxworth calls the 102 robberies in 2009 unusually low.
He also said serial robbers are the main problem for the rise in 2010 from 2009.
So who is at the top of the San Diego most wanted list of bank robbers? "The Geezer Bandit," Foxworth said.
The bandit appears to be in his 70's and has robbed 11 banks over the past year. There is a $20,000 reward for his capture and conviction.
