‘Designated Driver' Accused of Driving Drunk

The man behind the wheel in a fatal accident Sunday was supposed to be the designated driver for an employee holiday party that night according to published reports.

Michael Landri, 30, was arrested for vehicular homicide in connection with a deadly accident in La Jolla Sunday night.

According to San Diego police investigators, Landri drove his Infiniti into a Volkswagon at the intersection of Genesee Ave and North Torrey Pines Road around 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Both cars burst into flames on impact.

A witness to the crash broke the Infiniti's windows and helped rescue Landri and a male passenger, described as "very drunk" according to the La Jolla Light. The two men suffered minor injuries.

Pacific Beach resident Jared Purton, Ph.D., 33, was the only person inside the Volkswagon.  He died in the crash. Purton worked at the Scripps Research Institute, according to the county's medical examiner.

The San Diego Union Tribune reported that Landri and his passenger had just left an employee holiday party before the crash.
