Descanso Deputy Bit by Rattlesnake

Off-duty Sheriff's Corrections Deputy air-lifted to hospital

A deputy in Descanso was airlifted to the hospital Wednesday after a rattlesnake bit him on the hand.

The off-duty Sheriff's Corrections Deputy walked to a nearby fire station on River Drive to report the bite at about 2:30 Wednesday afternoon, according to CalFire and Sheriff's Department authorities.

The fire crew was not in the station when the deputy arrived, so sheriff's deputies radioed for assistance and the fire crew responded.

The deputy was then transported via helicopter to UCSD Medical Center.

His condition is not known at this time.

Earlier Wednesday in a separate incident, emergency crews were called to Iron Mountain in Poway after a man called reporting a snakebite. The hiker was never located, and authorities believe the call was either a prank or the hiker made it successfully to the hospital.
