Deputy Involved in Traffic Collision in Carlsbad

A on-duty sheriff’s deputy was involved in a traffic collision with two other vehicles at an intersect in Carlsbad on Friday, according to the Sheriff’s department.

Police received multiple calls of an accident at the intersection of La Costa Ave and Rancho Santa Fe Rd. at around 9:46 a.m., said Steve Sutt, Sgt. with the Carlsbad police department. At the same time they also received a call from an on-duty deputy asking for help, he added.

A white Honda and Merecedes Benz were north-bound in the left turning lane on Rancho Santa Fe Rd. when the detetive's Ford sedan entered the intersection, Sutt said.

The detective's vehicle reportedly collided with the white Honda and then the Mercedes Benz.

“It's unclear as to how he entered the intersection," Sutt said, who went on to say that Carlsbad Police are investgating the accident and would close the intersection down for two hours.

The detective was on his way to work on a case inside an unmarked car when the accident happened, Jutt said.

The deputy, who is based out of San Marcos, complained of head and neck pain and was transported to Palomar Medical Center.

The detective is expected to make a full recovery.

The 60-year-old female driver of the Mercedes SUV was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital for pain, Jutt said.
