Del Mar Residents Worry About Latest Bluff Collapse Near Popular Beach

The main concern for people living in the area is the safety of the people walking their dogs near the bluffs

Another bluff collapse in Del Mar has residents there worried they might lose access to a popular beach.

The collapse happened at Dog Beach, which is right next to the race track. Residents said they were walking their dogs when they noticed part of the bluff had collapsed.

"I'm here every single day," Carla Hayes said. "It's really, really frightening."

She loves walking her dogs at Dog Beach every day. A few hours after her usual Friday morning walk, she saw a post on NextDoor showing a small bluff collapse.

"It's really scary," she said. "We haven't seen any to date until today."

The latest collapse happened near the area where a developer wants to build a luxury resort.

It was unknown when the collapsed had occurred Hayes said beach erosion is common at the bluffs near her Solana Beach home.

"You don't have to be a geologist, that's beach replenishment," she said. "That's what it's supposed to do but it's eroding very quickly."

What worries her about the collapse is losing access to the beach. It's one of the reasons she moved to the area.

"Our way of life is going to be impacted no matter what," Hayes said. "But it's still a beautiful and kind of much more friendly and laid back place for coastal living."
