San Marcos Woman Sentenced in Death of Fiance, Casino Employees

Debbie Sumi of San Marcos cried and apologized to the victim's families

A mother of four will spend 10 years in prison for a drunk driving crash that killed her fiance and two others on a San Diego County highway.

Debbie Sumi of San Marcos cried and apologized to the victim's families during her sentencing Monday for gross vehicular manslaughter according to a published report.

Just hours after Sumi got engaged Aug. 14, 2010, she and her boyfriend Larry Alvarez decided to drive to Oceanside to tell their family the good news. The couple never made it.

Sumi, who was driving with a suspended license, crashed her car into another vehicle that had pulled over on the shoulder along Highway 78 near Sycamore Avenue.

Susana Orozco, 23, of Escondido and Erica Oliva, 23, of Fallbrook both employees at Valley View Casino died in the crash.

The women had stopped along westbound SR-78 because one of them was feeling sick officials said.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Sumi was driving hit the parked Nissan and the women from behind killing both Orozco and Oliva.

Alvarez, sitting right next to her in the car, died in the crash.

Sumi's alcohol level was four times the legal limit, prosecutors said.
