Dead Baby Found in OC Dumpster; Woman Arrested

Newborn baby girl found, mother missing

A 19-year-old Anaheim woman was arrested Thursday on suspicion of murder for allegedly dumping her newborn baby daughter in a trash bin next to a Mexican restaurant in Stanton.

The woman, whose name was not released, was under guard at West Anaheim Medical Center, where she was being treated for ailments related to childbirth, according to Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino.

When she is medically cleared, she will be booked at the Orange County Jail on suspicion of murder, according to Amormino, who said the baby was alive when the woman gave birth.

It was not immediately clear how long the infant had been dead when her body was found about 7 p.m. Wednesday in a trash bin next to Sombrero's restaurant at 7006 Katella Ave.

The woman sought treatment Wednesday afternoon at West Anaheim Medical Center, 3033 W. Orange Ave., Amormino said.

"Since she continually denied recently giving birth to a child, staff notified the police department," Amormino said. "Her injuries were not consistent with what she was saying."

Investigators working the case subsequently found ``the remains of a full-term infant in the Dumpster in the alleyway adjacent to the restaurant,'' Amormino said.

Authorities were withholding the woman's name because investigators still need to do more interviews, Amormino said.

Earlier Thursday, he said there was "a strong possibility" that the baby was born in the women's restroom at the eatery and then dumped in the trash behind the restaurant.

In California, a "safe surrender" law allows parents or guardians to turn over an infant at a fire station or hospital within 72 hours of the child's birth without repercussions.
