Authorities in San Diego said a house fire killed a 91-year-old woman and injured three other people, including a police officer.

The fire was reported Monday morning in a home in the Scripps-La Jolla area at Hermosa Avenue and Midway Street and was extinguished in about 40 minutes.

A woman who lived in a separate flat behind the house died at the scene, according to Maurice Luque of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Catherine Bachelier-Smith, who lives in the neighborhood, said her husband smelled smoke around 5 or 6 a.m. and closed their window because it was bothering him.

Luque said the woman's son and a construction worker were sent to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and a police officer was hospitalized after falling and injuring her arm.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
