Fatal Crash on I-5 in Del Mar Slows Morning Commute

A deadly traffic crash on the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 in Del Mar caused delays for commuters Tuesday morning.

The crash occurred about 2:30 a.m. near the Via De La Valle exit.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a La Mesa man lost control of his Toyota Corolla and hit the highway's center divide.

He got out of the car and walked safely to the side.

Moments later, a black Mercedes hit the Toyota, which was still in traffic lanes.

The CHP said the 27-year-old La Mesa man walked back onto the highway for an unknown reason and was struck by a white Jeep.

He died at the crash site.

The CHP closed northbound lanes while crews cleared debris from the roadway.

About half a mile south of that collision, a pickup truck crashed into several vehicles about 4:45 a.m.

The pickup lost both axles.

No injuries were reported in that crash.

A third crash occurred about 5:15 am. on the northbound lanes of I-5 near the Del Mar Heights exit. The CHP cleared the crash about half an hour later.

No other information was available.
