Staff and volunteers at La Maestra Community Health Center in City Heights received a welcome surprise Tuesday: 5,000 pounds of food.
Feeding America San Diego (FASD) teamed up with local software company ESET to make the donation. FASD works with dozens of agencies across the county.
“Roughly 440,000 people in San Diego County are at risk of hunger, and here in City Heights the need is pretty tremendous as well,” said Gavon Morris with Feeding America San Diego.
Besides food, FASD also provides nutrition advice. Each food bag came with healthy recipes to prepare the ingredients inside. According to FASD, the organization donated 21.5 million pounds of food last year, 40 percent of which was fresh produce.
“It’s really central to our mission that we’re focusing on health and nutrition because of the epidemics of obesity and chronic disease,” Morris said.
La Maestra provides healthcare and education to underserved communities in San Diego. Its food pantry feeds more than 1,000 people each month.
