On Monday, the Coast Guard safely rescued an ailing man from a cruise ship, a mile off the coast of San Diego.

Local Coast Guard medics swooped into action on Monday, evacuating a man from a cruise ship about a mile off the coast off Point Loma.

A 71-year-old man aboard the cruise ship, Mariner of the Seas, was experiencing health problems while the ship was out to sea, approximately 50 miles south of San Diego, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Allyson Conroy.

The ship was directed to head to San Diego, so the Coast Guard could bring the man to shore, Conroy said.

At about 2:30 a.m., the petty officer said a Coast Guard vessel met the ship and transported the man to a waiting ambulance.

The man was transported to University of California, San Diego Hospital.
