Coast Guard Conducts Environmental Awareness Operations

Coast Guard responders plan to patrol Mission Bay and Oceanside Harbor by foot, in vehicles and small boats starting this week to investigate existing and potential environmental hazards and educate the public on how to safeguard local ports.

The enhanced operations, scheduled for October 14 through 21, are an effort by the Coast Guard to curb environmental degradation at local marinas.

“It is so important that the entire San Diego community take an active role in preventing harm to the environment,” said Lt. Kristin Driscoll, chief of Incident Management Division at Sector San Diego.“Keeping San Diego clean and beautiful has to be a holistic team effort. The overarching goal here is really to raise awareness and prevent pollution incidents before they occur.”

They also plan to educate marina operators, tenants and the boating public about the requirements for reporting oil spills.
