City, Transit Board Members Call for Changes to MTS' Compass Card

Two San Diego officials called on the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) to fix its Compass Card, a card used to pay fares on the city's buses and trolleys.

At a Tuesday press conference, San Diego City Council members and MTS board members Lorie Zapf and David Alvarez said the current cards leave customers vulnerable to credit card fraud. The board members joined the transit advocacy organization Circulate San Diego to address the issues.

They said they hope changes to the system will make it easier and safer to access.

“We need to be prepared and more versatile in order to serve the existing customers, but also the new ones that are coming along,” Zapf, who represents San Diego’s District 2, said.

Right now, customers cannot load funds onto the card, a capability that almost every other transit system in the nation allows.

Zapf said they are hoping the MTS will make the concerns a priority and update the compass cards so they meet payment industry compliance.
