Chula Vista Hosts World's Largest Swimming Lesson

This is the fifth year that Chula Vista has participated in WLSL.

The seventh annual World’s Largest Swimming Lesson (WLSL) kicked off at various locations around the world on Friday.

In San Diego County, the City of Chula Vista welcomed new swimmers at Loma Verde Aquatic Center and the Parkway Aquatic Center Friday afternoon.

This is the fifth year that Chula Vista has participated in WLSL. The purpose of the event is to bring awareness and prevention to drowning deaths of children.

Karina Craig, the Aquatics Supervisor in Chula Vista said drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in children ages one through 14.

“We want to bring awareness to our community and let our community know that we provide swimming lessons and that’s the first step in saving children’s lives from drowning,” she said.

Chula Vista became a record holder in the Guinness World Record last year for having the largest simultaneous swimming lesson. More than 38,000 participants from 22 different countries participated in the 2015 WLSL event.

Craig said they were expecting approximately 100 participants on Friday.

The open swimming lesson was free for anyone six months old and over.
