Gas Line Leak Prompts Evacuations, Road Closures

More than 60 people were evacuated from a Chula Vista strip mall due to a gas line leak on Thursday, which also prompted some surrounding road closures.

According to Chula Vista Police Department Capt. Gary Wedge, a gas line break on Eastlake Parkway caused some temporary road closures in the area at around 4 p.m.

Wedge urged people to avoid Eastlake Parkway between Birch Street and Crossroads, including the Marketplace at Winding Walk strip mall that houses a Vons grocery store and Bank of America.

The 4-inch high-pressure natural gas line was ruptured by a backhoe digging up a construction site to the west of the strip mall.

As of 5:40 p.m., San Diego Gas & Electric crews were attempting to close the valve.

Officials say no one was injured. However, gas readings in the area are high enough to block traffic at Eastlake Parkway and Birch Street and temporarily shut down seven nearby businesses.
