A state legislator has introduced a new resolution in support of naming a Navy ship after gay rights activist Harvey Milk.
Sen. Christine Kehoe of San Diego says Milk was a major influence in state and national politics and on issues of importance to the gay and lesbian community.
Kehoe, who was elected to San Diego’s City Council in 1993, was the city’s first openly gay elected official.
Just two months ago she was presented with the Harvey Milk Lifetime Leadership Award from the San Diego Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center, Inc.
In April, U.S. Rep Bob Filner also introduced a similar plan to honor Milk with the naval tribute. Milk served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant. Filner sent a letter to Navy Secretary Ray Mabus. So far the Navy hasn't responded.
Another recent honor for the late public servant, San Diego recently unveiled Harvey Milk Street in Hillcrest the day before what would’ve been Milk’s 82nd birthday.
Milk was the first openly gay politician to hold public office when he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. He pushed through a gay rights law before he and San Francisco's Mayor George Moscone were shot to death in November 1978.
