If it seems like the Padres have been dealing with a rather large number of injuries the last couple of years, it's because the Padres have been dealing with a rather large number of injuries the last couple of years.

In 2012, the Friars led MLB with 1883 man-games lost to injury.

In 2013, the Padres again led MLB with (and this is not a typo) 1883 man-games lost to injury.

In the run up to Spring Training there was excitement about the possibility of what this season may bring, as long as everyone stays healthy.

On Saturday, the Padres suffered their first major injury of 2014 when 3rd baseman Chase Headley strained his right calf muscle during a rundown drill. Headley will have an MRI to determine the severity of the strain, but that type of injury typically requires at least a couple of weeks of rest.

Headley is coming off a disappointing year where he suffered hand and knee injuries and saw his offensive production drop dramatically from his monster 2012 campaign. He reported to the Peoria Sports Complex early and fully healthy.

If there is a proverbial "silver lining" to this, it's the timing. If his injury does heal on a normal timetable, Headley will still have plenty of Cactus League at-bats to get ready for the regular season.
