Chargers Lose Vincent Brown

WR Breaks Ankle In Win Over Dallas

This is one of those stories that's simply no fun to write, so I'll just get it over with.

Chargers wide receiver Vincent Brown suffered a broken left ankle in San Diego's 28-20 preseason win over Dallas on Saturday night. He's going to need surgery and is very likely lost for the rest of the year.

The injury came on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Charlie Whitehurst in the 3rd quarter. Brown got his feet tangled with a Cowboys defender as he was falling to the ground.

"You hate it for the guy," said quarterback Philip Rivers. "He was having a great pre-season, a great camp, and you just hate to see anybody get injured. He was really coming on and was going to be a big part of what we do."

The former Aztecs star was really coming in to his own. He caught a touchdown pass in the preseason opener against Green Bay.

"He's one of the best route runners that we have on this team," said tight end Antonio Gates. "It's a blow to our offense."

Before training camp started, wide receiver looked like a position of strength for the Chargers. But, Eddie Royal has not practiced consistently with a few different ailments, and now Brown is out for the foreseeable future, so we'll see just how deep the Bolts are.

Richard Goodman, used last year almost exclusively as a kick returner, is a possibility to get more time at wideout. Veteran Roscoe Parrish has looked very solid in camp and will also be given an opportunity. Another guy to keep your eye on is Mike Willie, an undrafted free agent from Arizona State who's opened some eyes. Willie caught a 38-yard touchdown pass in the win over the Cowboys.

NOTES:

- The Chargers first team offense struggled for the second straight game. San Diego went scoreless in the first half. Philip Rivers completed 13 of 15 passes, but his two incompletions were both interceptions by Dallas safety Brandon Carr (one of the two went off his receiver's hands). Rivers has thrown 3 INT and 1 TD this pre-season.

- CB Shareece Wright intercepted a pass in the 4th quarter and returned in 73 yards to set up a short Jackie Battle touchdown run. The pass was tipped by CB DeAndre Pressley.

- Wright also forced a fumble when he blitzed Cowboys QB Stephen McGee. LB Darryl Gamble recovered the fumble.
