Theft, Vandalism in Carlsbad Shopping Center Debate

The already heated debate over a proposed new shopping center on the shore of Agua Hedionda Lagoon has just taken an ugly turn. Carlsbad Police are investigating a number of complaints concerning stolen and vandalized political signs.

In just two weeks Carlsbad residents will go to the polls to vote on Measure A, which, if passed, would pave the way to a 27-acre outdoor mall.

Passions on both sides of this issue are turning neighbor against neighbor.

Melanie Murnane is against the mall project. Twice Tuesday she returned to Cannon Road to readjust her "No on Measure A" sign. She says proponents keep blocking it.

“They place their signs right in front of ours,” Murnane said.

Further south, closer to Omni La Costa resort Bob Christiansen reported on the Carlsbad NextDoor app.

He said his signs in support of the measure were stolen from his front yard.

“I'm very concerned about my private property. I am very concerned about people coming on my private property and taking what's not theirs,” Christiansen said.

Carlsbad police say they've received six stolen sign complaints and one vandalism complaint in which the word "No" was drawn over a sign supporting the proposed project.

“I just think it is wrong - period,” Christiansen said.

“There are probably high school students out taking campaign signs that's not condoned on either side,” Murnane said.

While there is no compromise between these two sides, both sides agree on one thing - leave the signs alone.

If you have information about these complaints or would like to report one of your own you can do so by calling Carlsbad Police's non-emergency police phone number (760) 931-2197.
