Carlsbad Police Investigate Suspicious Death

Police responded to the report of a suspicious death inside a gated community

A man's body was found inside a home in a Carlsbad gated community.

Officers with crime scene tape and a small crowd of people were gathered outside the home on Badger Lane east of the Rancho Carlsbad Golf Course.

Carlsbad police were called to the home owned by Jason and Julie Harper at 11:06 p.m. Tuesday and discovered the body of a white male in his 30's, according to Lt. Kelly Cain.

Cain could not say who called police and would not identify the decedent until the medical examiner's office has finished its investigation.

Julie Harper, 39, was arrested on Wednesday afternoon as a homicide suspect. She was found at her father's home at 11270 Lakerim Rd. in Scripps Ranch.

Booking information that became available Wednesday night confirmed Harper was being held at the Vista Detention Facility on a first-degree murder charge. She's scheduled to appear in court Friday.

Documents reveal Harper filed for divorce from her husband Jason on Aug. 2.

Investigators confirmed the couple's three children are ages 9, 6, and 18 months. The children were found unharmed and are in the custody of Carlsbad police.

Prior to a news conference at 8 a.m., the only details Carlsbad police would reveal is that the report was of a suspicious death and that “the call is associated with possibly three juveniles and their mother.”
