1 Killed, 1 Injured in SR-94 Crash

Erick Zuniga, 29, died following a crash in the Golden Hill area Thursday

The medical examiner's office has identified a 29-year-old man killed in a crash on State Route 94 in Golden Hill earlier this week.

According to the ME, the victim is San Diego resident Erick Zuniga.

On Thursday night, Zuniga was driving a white Acura Integra on westbound SR-94 when his car veered off the freeway, overturned, struck a palm tree and landed in an embankment.

The single-vehicle accident happened just before 7:40 p.m. off westbound SR-94 near Glendale Avenue and F Street. Officials from CHP, the San Diego Police Department and San Diego Fire-Rescue all responded to the scene of the crash.

Police were a block away from the incident when it happened, and were able to respond immediately, according to officials.

When emergency crews arrived, they found two patients trapped inside the Acura. Emergency crews worked to stabilize the car before they could begin extricating the occupants.

Zuniga died at the scene.

A 15-year-old female passenger was removed from the car and taken to UCSD Medical Center with major injuries.

Officials said the car was part of caravan of family and friends, and, for unknown reasons, the car slammed into a palm tree.

CHP officials temporarily blocked off the 25th Street off-ramp from westbound SR-94 while they cleared the area.

The crash is under investigation.
