Car Strikes Utility Pole, Closes Highway

The driver of a car that lost control near Ocean View Boulevard and Market Street was killed instantly according to San Diego police

A car traveling along a San Diego-area highway struck a power pole, killing the driver instantly officials said.

The young man was driving the Toyota Matrix at a high rate of speed when he lost control along State Route 15 near Ocean View Boulevard and Market Street according to San Diego police Lt. Mark Bennett.

The man described as Hispanic and in his 20’s was killed instantly, Bennett said.

The crash clipped a supporting line to a utility pole causing it to fall onto the highway.

Some debris hit a vehicle heading northbound on SR-15 near Market Street.

There was no injury to that driver and only minor damage to the car officials said.

Crews from San Diego Gas & Electric arrived to the scene soon after the accident happened around 3:30 a.m.

Power was turned off for thousands of customers in Mountain View and Sherman Heights.

A section of SR-15 was closed to highway traffic for several hours. SDG&E cleared the scene by 7 a.m.
