Two elderly people have been hospitalized after their car collided with a train near downtown San Diego.

San Diego Police Department Officer Brad Ruff says the car collided at about 8:40 a.m. Friday with the Coaster, a commuter train that travels from Oceanside to downtown San Diego.

The vehicle passengers, both in their 80s, were transported to a hospital. The driver is being treated for head injuries and the passenger had minor injuries.

It was not immediately clear if either the car or train ran a stop signal.

Ruff says no injuries have been reported by train passengers. He says it's unlikely the crash caused a derailment, but the train has not left the area to allow for investigators to assess the scene.

Traffic is being diverted from the area.
