Fire spread from one car to another and then into an El Cajon condo

A fire spread from cars, up to an apartment in El Cajon early Wednesday.

Heartland Fire and San Miguel responded just before 2 a.m. at the complex near East Madison.

NBC 7 obtained flame video from a neighbor’s cell phone.

The victim, Bernard Royal, spoke exclusively with NBC 7, and said he was awakened to what sounded like gunshots.

The sound turned out to be that of car tires popping.

The San Diego chapter of the American Red Cross is helping the victim and his father find a place to stay.

The cause of the fire in under investigation.
