Firefighters responded to reports of a brush fire that sparked up in Poway Monday afternoon.

The fire started near Metate Lane, in a canyon between Poway Road and Scripps Poway Parkway at about 1 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire Department.

The fire is near a business park and a horse staging area. Residents and businesses nearby were told they could evacuate, but the order was not mandatory.

Two helicopters assisted firefighters in battling the blaze. About 100 firefighters responded with 20 engines and two airtankers.

The fire burned about 8 acres in total. Shortly after responding, crews successfully knocked the fire down.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
