Boy Robbed at Knifepoint Near Otay Ranch Mall: CVPD

Chula Vista police are searching for three people suspected of robbing a child at knifepoint in Otay Ranch Wednesday afternoon.

The three suspects reportedly held the boy up with a knife and took his backpack and cell phone just after 1 p.m. near the Otay Ranch Mall, Chula Vista Police Department Captain Phil Collum said.

Police did not say how old the victim was or if he was a student at Veterans Elementary School or Mater Dei Catholic High School which are both within a mile of the scene.

Nearby business owners told NBC 7 that investigators were checking in to see if the suspects were picked up by surveillance cameras.

People strolling about the area told NBC 7 it's generally a safe place to be.

"We've had incidents in the past, primarily robberies, but nothing where there was any kind of violence or anyone being held up like that before," Ray Chan said.

Some said the proximity of alleged hold up to nearby schools is concerning.

"I think that it's really painful that people are still doing violence, especially in an area like this," Devonte Allen said. "I mean honestly, somebody robbing somebody at knifepoint, that's pretty painful to hear."

Investigators have not released any suspect descriptions.
