CHP Vehicle Strikes and Kills Pedestrian

The victim was running across eastbound I-8 at the time of the accident

An officer driving a CHP unit struck and killed a pedestrian on eastbound Interstate-8 Saturday night.

CHP said the accident happened around 10 p.m. near Sports Arena Boulevard.

According to authorities, the male pedestrian was running across I-8 when the officer’s CHP vehicle hit him.

The man died at the scene.

CHP shut down traffic on a portion of the eastbound I-8 during the investigation.

On Sunday morning, authorities said the victim had not yet been identified. A report by the medical examiner revealed the man appeared to be between 40 and 60 years old.

CHP said they have not ruled out the possibility of suicide in this case. They are still unsure whether or not the pedestrian intentionally ran across the freeway.

Authorities said the CHP officer who struck the man was shaken up after the accident. That officer’s name or information about how long he’s been with the CHP has not been released.
