CHP Reports 500+ Crashes on First Day of Storm

The first day of the storm in San Diego County brought along heavy rain, strong winds, minor flooding and hundreds of car accidents along local roadways, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Between 12:01 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Friday, the CHP counted a total of 514 collisions along CHP jurisdictions, which includes San Diego freeways and unincorporated areas.

Not surprisingly, the highest number of rain-related crashes happened during the evening commute, between 4 p.m. and 7:59 p.m. at rush hour, the CHP responded to 89 collisions.

The Friday morning commute also brought dozens of accidents, 64 total between 6 a.m. and 7:59 a.m.

Also mid-afternoon saw its share of accidents, 78 crashes between noon and 1:59 p.m., according to the CHP.

To put the numbers into perspective, the CHP says that on a normal, β€œgood weather” day, their agency sees anywhere between 50 to 75 crashes.

As the storm continues through the weekend, more accidents will be reported. Check back for those updates as the CHP makes them available.
