Brush Fire in Mission Trails Park Contained, Burns 13 Acres

Tuesday's early morning fog helped firefighters as they mopped up the area and kept an eye on hot spots, SDFD officials said.

A brush fire that sparked in Mission Trails Regional Park was contained to 13 acres, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD) confirmed Monday night.

Santee Fire crews responded to a vegetation fire at 4:10 p.m. on Big Rock Road and Shantung Drive.

Residents took video and watched as the fire crept up the east side of Cowles Mountain.

" I just want to keep everybody safe I have kids . Looks like the fire fighters are doing a really good job."

"I just want to keep everybody safe. I have kids. Looks like the firefighters are doing a really good job,"  resident Kasey English said.

Firefighters worked to box in the fire with continued retardant drops.

It was a fire primarily fought by air--crews used three helicopters and two air tankers.

"We can see our firefighters doing drills. I have lots of confidence. I feel pretty safe," English added.

After four hours, firefighters had the fire contained to 13 acres Monday night.

Tuesday's early morning fog helped firefighters as they mopped up the area and kept an eye on hot spots, officials said.

There were no injuries reported, and it is not yet known what caused the fire.

While some homes on Mesa Road were threatened by the fire, no homes were damaged. No evacuations were ordered.

Hikers and cyclists were told to leave the park for their own safety. Firefighters were meeting with park officials to determine if the trails would be reopened Tuesday.

Firefighters included units from Cal Fire, SDFD and Heartland Fire.
