A brush fire started Monday afternoon in a canyon near National City, fire authorities said.
The fire started at about 4:30 p.m. just east of the 2300 block of Van Ness Avenue on the border of National City and San Diego, according to Heartland Fire Department.
The department said the fire was burning at a medium rate of spread in medium fuel.
There are homes at the top of the canyon, but as of about 5 p.m., firefighters had the fire surrounded and the fire chopper was preparing to do water drops.
Shortly after 5 p.m., the fire was contained.
