Fire Burns 500 Acres Near Palm Springs

The fire started late Saturday and prompted the closure of Highway 111

A brush fire that started late Saturday in the Palm Springs area burned over 500 acres and prompted authorities to close Highway 111 northwest of Palm Springs.

The fire is burning in the rugged San Jacinto Mountains near the San Gorgonio Pass. Wind gusts were blowing smoke into the Coachella Valley.

No structures are threatened.

Containment of the Windy Point fire was at 80 percent early Monday. The fire started at about 7 p.m. Saturday near Highway 111 east of Overture Drive.

Traffic between Banning and Palm Springs was detoured to Interstate 10 and North Indian Avenue. The  highway was closed between Overture Drive and the Palm Springs city limits at Gateway Drive, according to the Palm Springs Police Department.

The northbound side of Highway 111 reopened at about about 1 p.m. Sunday.
