A brush fire sparked up in a canyon near UCSD Thursday afternoon, sending billows of smoke into the area.
The fire started in a canyon on the north side of Genesee Avenue and SR-52 at about 2:30 p.m., fire authorities said.
As of about 3 p.m., the fire had burned one acre in the canyon, which lies below a row of houses. No evacuations were ordered and no injured were reported.
One lane of SR-52 was blocked as heavy smoke filled the area. Delays are expected on the eastbound SR-52, according to information on NBC 7's traffic page.
A helicopter was called to drop water on the flames.
