Broken Fire Hydrant Shoots Water Into Air, Floods Street in El Cajon

A broken fire hydrant caused flooding in the streets of a residential area in El Cajonon Tuesday afternoon.

According to Heartland Fire Department officisl, the hydrant on the 800 block of Lura Avenue intially appeared to have been hit by a vehicle.

But the Helix Water Department told NBC 7, the hydrant broke on its own, possibly due to rusted bolts. There was no collision that caused in the incident.

Video taken by NBC 7's news chopper showed a geyser shooting high into the air, causing flooding in the front yard of a home and the street.

The water department also said the hydrant appears to be about 50 years old and had been installed when the neighborhood was developed.

No other information was immediately available.
