Brewers Hold Off Padres

Ninth inning rally falls short as the Padres lose in Milwaukee 6-5.

The first and ninth innings provided hope. The middle innings not so much. The end result was another Padres road loss. Their record away from PETCO Park is now a league worst 6-21.

Will Venable lofted Yovani Gallardo's 4th pitch of the game deep into the left field bleachers.
That was his 7th career leadoff home run, tying the franchise record held by Quilvio Veras.

On the mound, Anthony Bass was cruising until the 6th. Bass had a 2-1 lead, but with 2 runners on he hung a slider to Martin Maldonado, who turned the pitch into a souvenir. Milwaukee took a 4-2 lead. The next batter, Edwin Mayonset hit another drive ---- and Cameron Maybin hit the wall hard.
Maybin had to leave the game. He was shaken up but not hurt. The center fielder is not expected to miss any playing time.

In the 9th, the Padres were down 6-2 when they tried to mount a rally. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases. After Chase Headley singled to bring in Chris Denorfia, the lead was cut to 3. Then Carlos Quentin drew a walk to force in a run, the lead was down to 2. After Yonder Alonzo struck out Jesus Guzman walked to force in another run, the lead was cut to 1. So John Baker had a chance to play hero, but the backup catcher struck out looking.

The Padres lost 6-5. They've played 9 series on the road this year ---- and still haven't won any of them. The Friars have a chance to end that streak in Seattle. The Padres and Mariners play a three game set starting Tuesday.
