Boy, 8, Nearly Drowned: Officials

An 8-year old boy is recovering this morning after he nearly drowned in a backyard pool in Carlsbad on Sunday night, according to officials.

The incident happened just after 9:30 p.m. at 2840 of Esturion Pl. when the boy fell into the water.

The parents were home when the boy fell in, according to firefighters. Police say it's unclear if the boy was outside alone when he went into the pool.

Mercy Air flew the boy to Rady Children's Hospital, where he is recovering.

"Paramedics were doing extensive work on the boy before he was life-lighted and also worked on him while en route to the hospital," said Carlsbad Fire Department Battalion Chief Luis Osuna.

Family friend Laura Smit told NBC 7 San Diego that the boy is okay, and doctors recently "removed the tubes" from the boy. She also said the family has 11 children.
