A convicted sex offender was taken into U.S. Border Patrol custody in El Centro after trying to illegally enter the country, according to Customs and Border Protection officials.

Agents found 32-year-old Alejandro Chavez Aguilera near Mount Signal Road Sunday morning.

After an interview with him, they discovered the Mexican citizen had been convicted of criminal sexual conduct in the fourth degree in Michigan, officials say, and he has since racked up multiple convictions for illegal entry into the U.S.

Aguilera now faces federal charges and is being held at the Imperial County Jail, awaiting prosecution.
