The Heartland Fire bomb squad was investigating a report of a suspicious device found near an Interstate 8 overpass in La Mesa on Monday, according to California Highway Patrol.
Officers began shutting down the Lake Murray Boulevard overpass around 12:15 p.m. after a caller reported something strange nearby.
Soon after, 70th Street was closed off, as were the north and southbound Lake Murray on-ramps to the westbound I-8 and the Parkway Drive on-ramp to the westbound I-8.
Traffic was crawling in the area as a result.
Investigators sent in a robot to check out the device.
