Body Found in Mission Bay Near Ventura Bridge

Lifeguards respond to report of body just south of Ventura bridge

Lifeguards responded to the scene of a body reported in the water of Mission Bay Monday night.

The body was located just south of Ventura Bridge near the Hyatt Islandia, according to authorities with the San Diego Police Department.

The medical examiner and police responded, in addition to lifeguards.

Last week, what lifeguards reported as a 24-year-old man was reported missing in the same area after he was last seen jumping off the Ventura Bridge.

A medical examiner confirmed that the body found was the same person who jumped off the bridge last week. The examiner reported that the man was actually 29.

Authorities said the body appeared to have been in the water for some time. In the medical examiner's report, the man was reportedly planning on going for a swim and meeting his cousin a short time later. However, he did not surface.

His death was confirmed after a boat found it in the water of Mission Bay.

The person who called 911 to report the man missing last week told emergency dispatchers that they were riding in a car with him when he suddenly told them to stop at the top of the bridge.

The person said he jumped straight into Mission Bay off the Ventura Bridge, according to an official with the San Diego Lifeguards.
