Teen died after being swept under surf at Manhattan Beach
The big waves proved too big for two people over the weekend.
A 17-year-old boy died after being swept underwater by strong surf during a weekend outing on a Southern California beach.
Police Sgt. Bryan Klatt said Dexter Lima died at a hospital at 6:15 p.m. Monday. Lima, of Torrance, Calif., had been on life support.
The boy was swimming near the pier in Los Angeles County with his cousin on Sunday evening when a wave knocked them under, authorities said. The cousin resurfaced, but Lima wasn't breathing and had no pulse when rescuers finally found him and brought him to shore more than 20 minutes later.
High weekend surf also killed a body surfer in Orange County. Monte Valantin, 50, of Lawndale, Calif., died at a hospital Saturday after giant waves slammed him against some rocks in Newport Beach.
The huge waves were at times double overhead, surfers said. By Sunday, the waves had died down but there were still 6-8 feet sets being reported on south-facing beaches. The swell was created by a storm last week in the South Pacific.
