A man riding with a small group of bicyclists in Leucadia was killed early Sunday morning when an unknown suspect in a pickup truck struck him and fled the scene.

James Steven Swarzman, 47, of Encino, was hit by a late model, blue Ford F-150 at about 1 a.m on the 1200 block of North Coast Highway, Encinitas station sheriff’s deputies said.

Swarzman, an avid cyclist, was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla via Mercy Air and was pronounced dead at about 4 a.m.

A witness following the truck just before the collision said the vehicle drifted between the middle of the No. 1 and No. 2 lanes before striking Swarzman from behind, sheriffs said.

Charges are pending against the at-large driver, who did not stop to provide assistance.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (868) 580-8477.
