Bicyclist Killed in Collision With Van

A bicyclist was killed Sunday morning when a Dodge van struck him in Lomita.

The accident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. on the 8000 block of Skyline Drive. San Diego police suspect the van's driver, a 47-year-old female traveling westbound, veered into the bike lane.

The victim, pronounced dead at the scene, was described as hispanic and in his 50s.

"At this time, investigators are trying to determine why the driver, who at this point has been considered the primary cause, veered to the right and struck the bicyclist," said Darryl Hoover, field lieutenant with the San Diego Police Department

The victim was sent flying off the van's windshield, and nearby resident Isabel Huerta said the victim landed in front of her friend's house.

"She was just really terrified because the body was right in front of her house, and she could see the bike torn into pieces, and shoes and his hat all over the place," Huerta said.

The driver pulled over and was questioned at the scene.

No charges have yet been filed.
