A bicyclist killed last month in San Diego is gone, but not forgotten.

Friends of Pacific Beach resident David Ortiz, 29, are holding a "memorial ride" Wednesday to honor their friend and raise awareness for safety hazards on San Diego streets.

The ride will begin at Balboa Park, and end at the City of San Diego Administration Building on 202 C Street.

The trip is a plea to demand better infrastructure for cyclists, according to the group's organizers on Facebook.

Ortiz was killed about two weeks ago while riding in the bike lane on the 7500 block of Balboa Avenue. He was struck by a Ford Expedition, then rolled and was hit by two other cars in different lanes, according to a CHP report.

Balboa Avenue does not have a bike lane; just three travel lanes and a transition lane. Although Ortiz was wearing a helmet, he later died from his injuries.

The event will be held Wednesday from 4-5 p.m. For more information, visit the group's Facebook page.
