Police are investigating the death of a young woman whose body was found on the cliffs below the Torrey Pines Gliderport on Sunday.

People walking on the beach spotted the body about 80 feet up at 12:30 p.m. A rescue helicopter lowered a paramedic, who determined the woman was dead. The victim appeared to be in her 20s. A flashlight in the "on" position and a bottle of water were found near the dead woman, who appeared to have fallen about 50 feet down the cliff.

It's a somber reminder of how dangerous the area can be, police said.

"Obviously, the cliffs are dangerous, and they do have areas marked off where you shouldn't go and you should adhere to that," said San Diego police Lt. Tom Wood.

Police said the woman may have been there for some time. Authorities were unable to determine the woman's identity Sunday, the medical examiner's office said.
